Chapter 14 - THE CRIME BEHIND THE WHITMORE NAMEMarcus isolated the servers.

Federal technicians preserved most records.

Some were lost.

The black ledger became even more important.

I issued a public statement before Malcolm could create another story.

Whitmore Manufacturing had discovered historic misconduct involving employee pension assets.

I confirmed federal cooperation.

Promised independent review.

Did not call it an accounting irregularity.

Did not describe it as a family dispute.

The stock price fell before I finished speaking.

Board members demanded my resignation.

Two company attorneys resigned themselves.

News trucks surrounded the mansion.

Emma saw them through the library window.

“Did I do something bad?”

“No.”

“They came after I told you.”

“They came because adults did something wrong a long time ago.”

“Is Mr. Victor bad?”

“He did bad things. Then he told part of the truth.”

“Is Uncle Malcolm bad?”

I considered the answer.

“He made choices that hurt many people and is still trying to hide them.”

“Are we bad?”

“No family is one thing.”

She looked at the Whitmore portrait over the fireplace.

“Will they take our picture down?”

“Maybe.”

“Is that sad?”

“Yes.”

“Is it still right?”

I looked at my daughter.

“Yes.”

I sold the Palm Beach estate, private aircraft, and several family investments.

The mansion remained temporarily because it was part of the investigation.

Malcolm called the sales acts theatrical.

“They won’t cover everything.”

“No.”

“You’re destroying assets generations built.”

“Some were built with stolen money.”

He ended the call.

That night, someone fired a shot through my study window.

No one was hurt.

The bullet struck the family painting.

Right between my father and Malcolm.
