Chapter 16 - EMMA SAW ANOTHER MANAaron’s proposed evidence was false.

He admitted helping construct it.

Malcolm planned to release a ledger containing my forged initials if the genuine book surfaced.

Aaron stored it in a bank box.

Federal agents recovered it.

The paper was modern.

The ink recent.

Still, photographed pages could mislead the public before analysis caught up.

Aaron agreed to testify about the fabrication.

In exchange, prosecutors considered his cooperation while pursuing charges for attacking the technician, tampering with evidence, and participating in the conspiracy.

During a second child interview, Emma remembered another detail.

The angry man wore a ring.

A gold square with a black center.

Malcolm’s family ring.

But a third man briefly entered the study.

“Who?”

“The one with shiny shoes.”

“Did you see his face?”

“No.”

“What did he do?”

“He gave Uncle Malcolm Daddy’s red book.”

A red book.

Not the black ledger.

Emma drew it.

Small.

Gold edge.

Marcus recognized the description.

The mansion’s emergency access register.

It contained override codes for private rooms.

Only the head of household and head of security should possess copies.

My copy remained in the secure cabinet.

Marcus’s copy was missing.

He had last seen it after Laura’s funeral.

The third man had stolen it years earlier and returned it to Malcolm during the break-in.

Security footage from the funeral showed Aaron in ordinary black shoes.

Another employee wore patent leather.

Marcus’s predecessor as security chief.

Samuel Voss.

He retired after Laura died and moved overseas.

Records showed monthly payments from Malcolm.

Samuel had taught Aaron how to create camera gaps.

The betrayal stretched across two generations of security.

Marcus looked devastated.

“Samuel trained me.”

“Then you know what he knew.”

“And what he could bypass.”

Samuel was arrested while entering Canada under another name.

Inside his luggage, agents found copies of Laura’s medical schedule.

Her death investigation reopened more seriously.
