Chapter 7 - THE MARK BEHIND THE FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHLaura had investigated the pension fund.

I found her private notes inside an encrypted archive connected to W-4917.

The access password was Emma’s full birth date.

The file opened at sunrise.

Laura’s face appeared in a recorded message.

She sat in the same study.

The painting was visible behind her.

“If you are watching this, Adrian,” she began, “then I failed to tell you in person.”

My chest tightened.

Emma was asleep in the adjoining library under guard.

I watched with Marcus and Agent Reed.

Laura explained that she discovered missing pension assets while reviewing the company’s charitable accounts.

The fraud began twenty-three years earlier.

Malcolm moved money into speculative developments.

Some investments failed.

Others succeeded.

Instead of returning the gains, he hid them inside private family companies.

My father discovered the theft.

He demanded partial repayment.

Then concealed the crime to prevent the company’s collapse.

Victor helped alter the records.

Thousands of employees received smaller pensions without knowing why.

“Adrian believes the fund is healthy,” Laura said.

“I wanted to tell him. His father begged me to wait until the missing assets were secured.”

My father had died before that happened.

Laura continued investigating alone.

Then Emma’s name appeared.

“I created a protected trust using my personal assets. If anything happens to me, it activates for Emma and the affected workers.”

The paper from the safe was likely part of that trust.

“Do not allow the Whitmore family to control it,” Laura said.

“Not even Adrian until he knows the whole truth.”

The words hurt.

She loved me.

She did not trust what the family name might make me do.

The video ended with another warning.

“Victor wants to confess. Malcolm wants the ledger destroyed. Someone in security is helping him.”

Laura recorded the message two weeks before she became ill.

Her death had been classified as natural.

The investigation had never considered foul play.

I looked at Agent Reed.

He anticipated my question.

“We have no evidence connecting her death to the pension case.”

“Not yet.”

“No,” he said carefully. “Not yet.”

Marcus accessed the trust’s archived documents.

The section naming Emma had been removed remotely the previous night.

Someone wanted to prevent the trust from activating.

Then the mansion’s exterior camera detected movement near the rear gate.

A black sedan was leaving through a maintenance exit.

The driver was Aaron Pike.

On the passenger seat lay the black ledger.
