Chapter 10 - MARIAN COLE

Marian Cole was sixty-six.
Silver-blonde hair.
Elegant.
No visible fear.
She agreed to meet federal investigators with counsel.
She denied sending threat.
Her phone and devices later showed no link.
The guest Wi-Fi source could have been anyone near cottage.
Why was she at Alderwyn?
Grant called.
That alone mattered.
Grant asked her to “help contain legal chaos.”
She had not represented Hawthorne family in twelve years but retained confidentiality about old matters.
Julian met her only after prosecutors allowed.
Marian looked at him.
“You have Helena’s eyes.”
He hated.
“You slept with my father.”
Marian closed eyes.
“Straight there.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Off and on two years.”
“While married.”
“Yes.”
“Did mother know?”
“Eventually.”
“Did you draft forged trust?”
“No.”
“Did you draft restatement?”
“I drafted one based on Grant’s instructions and a memo I believed Helena approved.”
“Notary was dead.”
“I did not notarize.”
“Who did?”
Marian looked away.
“Silas’s office handled execution packets.”
Convenient.
She produced file copy.
Draft metadata showed legitimate preparation months before alleged signature, but execution returned later with Helena signature and false notary.
Could Grant have sent?
Yes.
Marian claimed she suspected irregularity only after Helena challenged.
“Why didn’t you stop use?”
“Because I loved Grant.”
“Because I told myself Helena was weaponizing trust in divorce.”
“Because admitting problem would expose me professionally and personally.”
Same patterns.
Julian said:
“So you helped.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
That honesty unsettled.
“Did father order Helena killed?”
“No.”
“You know?”
“I know Grant.”
“He wanted control.”
“He could be cruel.”
“He was terrified of public humiliation.”
“I do not believe he wanted her dead.”
“Silas sabotaged.”
Marian’s face crumpled.
“I learned years later.”
“You stayed silent.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Cowardice.”
Another simple word.
Marian cried.
Julian felt no comfort.
Then pregnancy.
“Did Grant know?”
Marian stared.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Hospital.”
“Did he tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said it would make death worse.”
“Was he father?”
“I don’t know.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“Daniel Hart?”
Marian nodded.
“Grant hated him.”
“Was mother still seeing?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were sleeping with my father while monitoring my mother’s affair?”
Marian almost laughed through shame.
“That family was not healthy.”
Understatement.
Then another secret:
The night Helena died, Grant and Marian had been together earlier.
At Alderwyn guest house.
Everett joined Grant after ten for business.
Grant’s alibi around crash partly based on both men.
Marian left at 10:30.
She saw Silas near garage with Ralph Danner.
“What were they doing?”
“Arguing.”
About car?
She could not hear.
She remembered Silas said:
“Grant said stop her, not wreck the damn thing.”
Julian went still.
She heard before crash.
That supported sabotage preplanned and Silas aware risk.
Did Grant hear?
Unknown.
Marian also remembered Helena came to guest house at 9:15, saw Marian there.
A confrontation.
Helena did not scream.
She said:
“Of course.”
That broke Marian.
Then Helena told Grant:
“I’m taking Julian tonight.”
Grant responded:
“You are not taking my son anywhere.”
Helena:
“He is not property.”
Grant:
“Neither are my shares.”
There.
Trust and child.
Marian said Grant told Silas after Helena left:
“Get papers and bring her back.”
No violence wording.
But atmosphere.
Marian admitted she advised Grant to let Helena go.
He ignored.
Julian sat.
His parents’ marriage was war.
Everyone around helped.
He asked:
“Who sent Nora threat?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why come?”
“Grant asked.”
“And because I knew box would expose me.”
“At least honest.”
Marian gave investigators old diary calendar.
One name repeated:
E.P. — 11:30 / garage
Everett Prescott.
The night of Helena’s death, his claimed alibi with Grant until eleven did not explain 11:30 garage.
Was he at crash plan?
Marian said Everett left estate around 11:05.
Could have gone garage first.
Then returned? Need timeline.
Security logs from 2008 long gone, but copies maybe in box? Not yet.
Julian left interview.
Nora waited in corridor? She had independent legal interest, but maybe not. She was downstairs with counsel. He saw.
“Marian?”
“She admitted affair.”
“Admitted helping trust cover.”
“Not threat.”
“Everett may be closer to night.”
Nora absorbed.
Then:
“How are you?”
He looked.
“No one asks that.”
“I am.”
“Bad.”
She nodded.
He laughed softly.
“I want to kiss you more now.”
“That seems unhealthy.”
“Probably.”
“Don’t.”
“I won’t.”
They walked together toward elevator.
No touching.
Then doors closed.
Nora looked at his reflection.
“Julian.”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you for not making me the person who fixes your grief.”
That struck.
Camille had perhaps been forced into that role too.
He nodded.
“Thank you for not letting me.”
Elevator opened.
Amelia approached.
“Everett Prescott has left country.”
“Where?”
“Private flight to Geneva.”
Julian swore.
Nora:
“Can he be stopped?”
“No warrant yet.”
Amelia continued:
“There is another issue.”
“What?”
“We found the person who sent threat.”
Julian tensed.
“It wasn’t Marian.”
“Who?”
Amelia looked at Nora.
“Elias Wren.”
Julian froze.
His friend.
Again.
Why?
Elias had already cooperated.
May you like
Unless not fully.
