Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT WITHOUT SECRETS

Julian and Nora took their first trip away four months after ballroom.
Not Paris.
Not St. Barts.
Vermont.
Nora needed settle Rebecca’s storage unit and small property.
Julian asked whether she wanted him.
“Yes.”
He flew commercial business class at her insistence? Greenwich to Burlington maybe car. They drove.
Four hours.
No entourage except Amelia following at distance because active case.
Nora teased.
“You know normal people stop for gas themselves.”
“I’ve heard.”
He bought terrible coffee.
She laughed.
Rebecca’s old duplex looked smaller.
Nora opened.
Dust.
Boxes.
Julian stood inside world that shaped her.
Photos:
Nora at eight skiing.
Rebecca in kitchen.
Ben at one birthday? Maybe not.
No Hawthorne visible except hidden box.
Nora found cassette Rebecca recorded near death.
She had not known.
Voice weak:
Nora, if you are listening, you went back. I’m sorry. I wanted you free of this, but I also left you responsibility I was too afraid to finish. That was unfair.
Nora cried.
Rebecca admitted:
She could have contacted Julian once he became adult.
She didn’t.
Not because active threat only.
Because she feared charges for taking documents.
Feared Grant would use money.
Feared Nora removed.
Then years made return harder.
Same as other stories: fear becomes shame.
I let Helena’s last request become reason to stay hidden. Maybe I failed her by waiting. Don’t make waiting your whole life.
Nora sat on floor.
Julian beside, not touching until she reached.
She whispered:
“Our mothers both thought hiding was protection.”
“Yes.”
“Your father too.”
He looked.
“Yes.”
That was core.
After evening, they stayed at inn.
One room? They are adult couple now. Nora asked one.
At dinner wine.
Back room, emotional intimacy.
She told Julian about Ben fully:
They had lived together eight months.
Had sex, ordinary adult relationship.
He proposed once.
She said no.
Later almost asked back.
Julian admitted he and Camille had been trying for no baby but discussing children, and had intense physical relationship that sometimes masked conflict.
Nora said:
“I don’t want us to do that.”
“Use sex?”
“To avoid hard stuff.”
“Agreed.”
Then they still made love.
Tasteful.
No explicit.
Morning snow.
Nora woke feeling peaceful then panicked.
“What?”
“I’m happy.”
He laughed.
“That’s problem?”
“Yes.”
Because happiness creates something to lose.
Julian understood.
“No promises that nothing bad happens.”
“Terrible billionaire.”
“I can promise I won’t hide bad news.”
She looked.
“Better.”
He kissed.
Then Amelia called.
Grant had been arrested? Maybe too early. Let's do federal/state authorities execute search warrants at Hawthorne family office and Grant residence based trust fraud/obstruction. Not arrest yet.
Nora sighed.
“Of course.”
Julian dressed.
No avoiding.
They returned.
The trip had not solved past.
It gave them a model:
truth before performance.
Meanwhile Rebecca storage contained another clue.
A 2009 letter from Dr. Samuel Price, emergency physician who treated Helena at crash.
He wrote to Rebecca:
I need to correct what family was told. Helena regained consciousness briefly. She said, “Julian—tell him Grant did this.” I reported to Detective Lane. It was absent from final summary.
Julian read.
His body turned cold.
His mother’s last words implicated father.
Could be belief, not proof.
But report suppressed.
Detective Lane now retired.
Alive.
Why absent?
The cover reached police?
May you like
They find.
