Chapter 23 - REBECCA’S NAME
Nora used part of bequest to establish Rebecca Bennett Hospitality Scholarship for workers pursuing hotel-management certifications while employed in housekeeping, food service, or guest services.
Not huge foundation.
Annual awards.
Why hospitality?
Because Nora knew uniforms hide ambition.
She insisted Hawthorne name not on it.
Julian respected.
At first award ceremony, Nora spoke:
“My mother spent years believing safety required invisibility. I understand why. But invisibility has costs. This scholarship is not about escaping service work. It is about making sure work does not define how much voice a person gets.”
Applause.
Julian watched from back, not front.
Nora noticed.
After:
“You hid.”
“You said not make Hawthorne event.”
“Good.”
They kissed outside.
A reporter photographed but now narrative less toxic.
People moved on.
May you like
Public always does.
