Chapter 9 - THE LETTER REBECCA NEVER MAILED

Ben Kincaid was taller than Julian expected.

That annoyed him for no rational reason.

Nora had not invited them together.

Ben simply dropped her at diner because Nora’s car was in shop and he did not want paparazzi following rideshare.

He walked her to door.

Julian arrived early and saw.

Ben touched Nora’s shoulder.

Not intimate exactly.

Familiar.

Nora smiled.

Julian felt something ugly.

Then Ben noticed him.

“Julian Hawthorne.”

“Ben.”

Nora sighed.

“You two don’t need to do this.”

“Do what?” both said.

She rolled eyes.

Ben extended hand.

Julian shook.

“Take care of her.”

Nora snapped:

“I take care of myself.”

Ben smiled.

“That too.”

He left.

Julian watched.

Nora sat.

“You’re jealous.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“Very.”

He almost smiled.

“Are you together?”

“No.”

“Do you want to be?”

Nora’s eyebrows lifted.

“That’s personal for man whose engagement ended yesterday.”

“Fair.”

He looked away.

She softened.

“Ben and I were almost engaged.”

“I ended because I couldn’t tell truth.”

“He moved on.”

“We are friends.”

“Moved on?”

“Girlfriend in Boston.”

Julian felt relief.

Nora caught.

“Pathetic.”

“Agreed.”

That broke tension.

Then Nora produced envelope.

Rebecca’s handwriting:

NORA — ONLY AFTER HELENA’S BOX IS OPEN

Nora had found sealed among mother's papers but followed instruction.

Inside, thirteen pages.

Rebecca described last six months of Helena’s life.

Some confirmed trust.

Some new.

Helena believed Grant had another relationship.

Not just business.

A woman named Marian Cole, Hawthorne general counsel then, married.

Helena found hotel receipts.

Texts.

This adult affair mattered because Marian drafted forged trust documents.

If affair existed, conflict and conspiracy deeper.

Julian frowned.

“I knew Marian.”

“She died?”

“Retired. Lives in Maine.”

Alive.

Rebecca wrote Helena discovered Grant and Marian had been sleeping together for at least eighteen months.

Grant told Helena relationship ended.

It hadn’t.

Helena confronted Marian.

Marian claimed she loved Grant and trust changes were lawful.

Later Marian became involved in suppressing challenge.

Did she forge?

Unknown.

Rebecca suspected.

Then shocking line:

Helena told me she was pregnant when she died.

Julian stopped.

“What?”

Nora stared.

“I didn’t know.”

Helena forty? If Julian 14 and Helena had him at 26 -> 40. Plausible.

Rebecca wrote Helena had just learned.

She had not told Grant.

She feared pregnancy would complicate divorce and custody.

Was child Grant’s?

Rebecca believed yes, but Helena had also admitted one brief relationship after marital separation? Need 18+ nuance. Maybe Helena had kissed/slept with independent counsel? Could create paternity uncertainty, too soap. But adult drama. Let's use tastefully.

Rebecca wrote:

Helena had separated from Grant privately for six weeks the previous spring and briefly became involved with Daniel Hart, an attorney advising the foundation. She ended it and returned home before learning she was pregnant months later. Timing made Grant overwhelmingly likely father, but Helena admitted she had not yet confirmed. She intended to tell him after leaving.

Julian stared.

His mother had another relationship.

The perfect dead mother became adult woman.

Messy.

Human.

He felt betrayed irrationally.

Nora noticed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“You’re allowed.”

“She cheated?”

“Rebecca says separated.”

“Grant wouldn’t call it.”

“Does that matter?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“I don’t know.”

He laughed bitterly.

He had criticized family for simple narratives and now wanted one.

Helena saint.

Grant villain.

Reality resisted.

Rebecca continued:

Grant learned about Daniel Hart through surveillance and became enraged.

This may have intensified threats.

Daniel later died? Need witness maybe alive. Let's make alive, retired federal judge? No. A lawyer now 67 in Vermont.

Helena’s pregnancy was not in autopsy? It should be if early. Maybe early 7 weeks and noted in sealed medical. Grant suppressed? Rebecca says hospital informed family representative but not Julian. Could verify.

Julian’s face changed.

“My father knew?”

Probably.

Another secret.

Rebecca’s final section:

Nora, I need you to understand Helena was not perfect. She drank too much some nights. She was angry. She had an affair after separation. She lied to Julian about how bad marriage had become because she thought she was protecting him. None of that makes forged trust true. None makes her deserve death. People will use imperfection to erase wrongdoing. Don’t let them.

Nora looked at Julian.

“That sounds like why Mom wanted you to read after box.”

Julian nodded.

Truth with blemishes.

More credible.

Then:

Daniel Hart has a copy of Helena’s private journal pages. I never contacted after we fled. If alive, he may know more.

Address old.

Amelia later finds.

Julian folded letter.

Nora said:

“You don’t have to make mother perfect to love her.”

He looked.

“I know intellectually.”

“Intellect is cheap.”

He smiled.

“Your mother again?”

“No. Ben.”

Jealousy flicker.

She saw.

“Relax.”

He laughed.

Then silence.

Something charged.

Nora’s bruised cheek lighter now.

No maid uniform.

Black sweater.

Hair loose for first time.

Julian realized she was beautiful.

Not ballroom shock.

Different.

He looked away deliberately.

Nora noticed.

“Why did you do that?”

“What?”

“Look away.”

He chose honesty.

“Because I’m attracted to you and timing is terrible.”

Nora went still.

Direct.

Her face warmed.

“Very terrible.”

“Yes.”

“I was employee until yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“You’re still technically connected through settlement and housing.”

“Yes.”

“Which is why I’m not doing anything.”

She looked at him longer.

“Good.”

“Disappointed?”

She almost smiled.

“Maybe.”

There.

Adult spark.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Message:

Rebecca should have stayed gone. So should you.

Nora’s face drained.

Julian saw.

She handed phone.

He read.

No theatrics.

He called Amelia.

Threat.

Who knew Rebecca’s name now? Many after hearing, but not publicly.

The engagement video contained Nora’s name maybe not Rebecca.

Only family, counsel, security, bank.

Inside source.

Nora’s fear returned.

Julian said:

“You’re not going back hotel alone.”

She stiffened.

“Don’t order.”

“You’re right.”

“What would make you feel safe?”

She thought.

“Ben’s place.”

Julian’s stomach sank.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

Nora almost laughed.

“That hurt.”

“Yes.”

“You still said okay.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe Rebecca was right about you.”

That meant more than flirtation.

Then Nora added:

“But I’m not going to Ben’s. His girlfriend would hate me.”

Julian smiled despite.

They arranged independent secured apartment through witness-protection liaison? Not official. Private security with Nora consent.

On the way out, Nora stopped.

“If timing were not terrible?”

Julian looked.

She continued:

“Would you have kissed me?”

His voice lowered.

“Yes.”

Nora’s breath changed.

Then:

“Goodnight, Julian.”

She left.

He stood in diner feeling sixteen.

Then phone rang.

Amelia.

“We traced threat.”

“Who?”

“Burner routed through Alderwyn guest Wi-Fi.”

“Guest?”

“Yes.”

“Who’s still there?”

Amelia paused.

“Marian Cole checked into east cottage this afternoon.”

Julian froze.

His father’s former lawyer.

His mother’s alleged rival.

The woman who may have drafted forged trust.

May you like

She had come back to Alderwyn the moment Helena’s box opened.
