Chapter 11 - ELIAS’S SECOND BETRAYAL

Elias did not deny sending the message.

He looked destroyed when Julian confronted.

“I wanted her gone.”

“Why?”

“Because Grant told me she was extorting.”

“You had evidence?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because everything was collapsing.”

Julian laughed.

“So you threaten a woman whose mother fled our family?”

“I wasn’t threatening harm.”

Rebecca should have stayed gone. So should you.

Nora sat beside her attorney during interview.

She spoke:

“That is threat to me.”

Elias looked ashamed.

“You’re right.”

He explained Grant had contacted him after box.

Said Nora planned to sell story.

Said Rebecca stole millions in documents.

Said Nora would implicate executives.

Elias panicked because he had signed consents and hidden Camille affair.

He wanted Nora to leave before more.

He created burner at Alderwyn.

Stupid.

Not criminal masterminding.

Fear.

Julian asked:

“Did you know mother trust forged?”

“No.”

“I knew Grant’s authority had questions.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

“Not legally.”

Elias was right partly.

Doubt vs knowledge.

He had requested trust opinion two years earlier.

Grant’s counsel replied authority valid.

Elias accepted.

Still.

“Why did Everett pressure you?”

“Merger.”

“Camille.”

“He knew we slept together.”

“Any money?”

“No.”

“Did you manipulate financials?”

“Presentation assumptions, yes.”

“Not books.”

Governance issue.

He resigned.

Not wait firing.

“I’m done.”

Julian felt grief.

He and Elias had built company strategy together.

Vacationed.

Elias stood at Helena memorial every year.

Friendship real.

Betrayal real.

Julian said:

“Why didn’t you tell me Camille?”

“I was afraid to lose you.”

“You lost anyway.”

“I know.”

Nora watched.

Later she said:

“You can forgive and still not hire him.”

Julian looked.

“I’m not near forgive.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“Progress.”

Their attraction continued.

But plot escalated.

Everett in Geneva transferred funds from Prescott family entity.

Federal authorities sought records.

Camille voluntarily gave emails.

One email from Everett to Grant, two days after Helena death:

Silas understands the necessity of keeping Rebecca quiet. She left before we could recover papers. Do not chase unless she surfaces. Too much attention.

Grant:

Agreed. Julian cannot know Rebecca existed beyond staff.

There.

Explicit cover.

Another:

Trust restatement must be treated final. Marian will not challenge.

Forgery conspiracy.

Camille’s cooperation became crucial.

She also surrendered messages with father about Nora necklace.

Three months earlier:

CAMILLE:

A maid has something that looks like Helena’s locket.

EVERETT:

Do not let Julian see. Get photograph if possible.

CAMILLE:

Why?

EVERETT:

Because that necklace was stolen by Rebecca Bennett.

CAMILLE:

Who?

EVERETT:

Old employee. Do not ask Julian.

So Camille initially didn’t know full.

She later learned box but still hid.

Nuance.

Julian issued public statement ending engagement.

No blame details.

Camille issued:

“We have ended our engagement. I regret conduct toward an Alderwyn employee and am cooperating with investigations concerning historical Hawthorne-Prescott matters. I ask that Ms. Bennett’s privacy be respected.”

Public response brutal.

Riding-crop video made her villain meme.

Luxury brands distanced.

Charity board suspended.

Some criticism deserved.

Some misogynistic abuse not.

Nora saw comments threatening Camille.

She felt uncomfortable.

“She hit me.”

“She shouldn’t be threatened.”

Julian’s team publicly condemned harassment.

Important.

Accountability not mob.

Camille later sent Nora handwritten apology.

I hit you because I believed status meant I could punish humiliation. That is ugly truth. I also accused you of theft because I was afraid of what your necklace meant. I am sorry. I do not expect forgiveness.

Nora did not respond.

Not yet.

Then Daniel Hart was located.

Seventy.

Still practicing part-time legal mediation in Vermont.

He agreed meet.

He had Helena’s journal pages.

And one secret Rebecca never knew.

On the afternoon Helena died, Daniel and Helena met.

Helena told him she had already changed plan.

She was not going straight to Julian.

She intended first confront someone at the estate garage.

Someone she believed had been following Rebecca.

“Who?”

Daniel said:

“Everett Prescott.”

Nora felt cold.

Julian asked:

“Why?”

“Helena believed Everett was the one who arranged surveillance outside Rebecca’s cottage.”

“And?”

Daniel looked.

“She told me if Everett admitted, she would go to police before seeing Julian.”

“Did she meet him?”

“I don’t know.”

But Marian’s calendar placed E.P. at garage 11:30.

Helena left around 11:22? Maybe actual records might be wrong.

If she met Everett before driving, timeline of crash changed.

Then Daniel handed journal page.

Helena wrote:

Everett is more afraid than Grant. That makes him dangerous. Grant wants control. Everett wants escape. Men who want escape make different choices.

Julian stared.

Everett had fled to Geneva.

Not proof murder.

But now center.

At end of meeting, Daniel looked at Julian.

“Your mother loved you enough to make terrible choices too.”

Julian stiffened.

“What?”

“She kept you in the dark.”

“She lied about marriage.”

“She planned to take you that night without explaining first.”

“That was protection.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Exactly what Grant called his choices.”

Julian felt angry.

Nora touched his sleeve once.

Tiny.

Then withdrew.

He noticed.

Daniel continued:

“Don’t turn Helena into saint. Learn from her too.”

Julian hated.

Because true.

Outside, Julian sat on steps.

Nora beside.

He said:

“Everyone who loved me lied.”

She answered:

“Then maybe your job is not finding person who never lies.”

“Maybe it’s choosing what happens when truth hurts.”

He looked at her.

“Are you ever going to stop saying things that make me want to kiss you?”

Nora’s cheeks warmed.

“No promises.”

This time she did not tell him don’t.

But neither moved.
