Chapter 10 - THE CAMERA ON RACHEL’S PHONEThe phone videos were recovered under the legal process.

Thirty-seven clips involving Emily.
Thomas watched only those Eleanor and the child specialist recommended.
He refused to consume his daughter’s distress like evidence entertainment.
The pattern mattered.
Rachel started recording after conflict had already begun.
Never before.
One clip:
Emily shouting:
“Stop touching Mom’s things!”
The beginning was missing.
Lucas later explained Rachel told him to take Olivia’s jewelry box from the shelf.
Another:
Emily pushed a bedroom door closed.
Rachel’s caption:
Physical aggression near Lucas.
The frame never showed Lucas on the opposite side of the room.
Another:
Emily threw a pillow.
Caption:
Escalating object throwing.
Before recording, Rachel had apparently told Emily Thomas planned to sell Olivia’s piano.
False.
Emily panicked.
In one video, Rachel’s reflection appeared in a mirror.
She was smiling.
Not broadly.
A small expression.
Satisfied.
Thomas replayed once.
Then stopped.
It resembled the expression he saw on the patio.
Not sadistic pleasure exactly.
Victory.
Rachel was getting what she wanted:
Evidence.
The most disturbing clip lasted fourteen seconds.
Emily sat on the floor crying.
Rachel’s voice from behind camera:
“Say it again.”
Emily:
“I wish Lucas never came here.”
Rachel:
“And?”
Emily shook her head.
“Say it.”
“I wish you never married Dad.”
Rachel stopped recording.
The file name:
EMILY FAMILY REJECTION — MAJOR
No recording of what Rachel said beforehand.
Lucas later remembered.
Rachel told Emily:
“If Olivia were alive, she’d probably have another family by now too.”
Emily screamed that Rachel was not her mother.
Then camera.
Provocation removed.
Reaction preserved.
A curated child.
Thomas felt anger unlike the patio.
The patio was visible cruelty.
This was architecture.
She had built a case one fourteen-second fragment at a time.
Then investigators found an editing app.
Several clips had been trimmed.
Not altered internally.
But shortened.
Dates renamed.
Exported to a folder:
REDWOOD EVIDENCE
Rachel had never intended the videos as parenting tools.
They were admissions material.
Thomas shut the laptop.
“I’m done.”
Eleanor nodded.
“You don’t need to watch more.”
He walked outside.
The patio remained empty.
For the first time, he considered tearing it out.
Then stopped.
Why destroy stone?
Rachel made the stone dangerous.
Not the stone.
May you like
Thomas was learning not to confuse symbols with causes.
Still, he could not look at it without seeing Emily on her knees.
