Chapter 26 - THE PATIOTwo years after the incident, Emily stepped onto the patio barefoot.

Thomas watched from the doorway.

For a long time she had avoided it.

Meals moved to another terrace.

No one asked why.

Then one summer morning, she walked out voluntarily.

The stone was warm.

She sat in a chair.

Not on the ground.

Lucas brought chalk.

“Can we draw?”

Emily hesitated.

Then nodded.

They covered part of the patio with enormous stars, cars, houses, badly drawn dogs.

Thomas joined.

His dog looked worst.

Emily laughed.

The patio changed.

Not erased.

Reused.

Dr. Markham had once told Thomas trauma does not require permanently surrendering every place connected to it.

Sometimes reclaiming is possible.

Only when chosen.

Thomas did not stage the moment.

No photograph.

No speech.

He simply sat on stone nearby and drew a terrible blue tree.

Emily told him it looked like broccoli.

He accepted the criticism.
