Chapter 29 - THOMAS’S SUITCASEThomas still owned the black suitcase.

One evening Emily found it in the storage room.

“That one?”

Thomas looked.

“Yes.”

“The patio suitcase?”

He laughed softly.

“I guess.”

“Why keep it?”

“It’s a suitcase.”

Emily stared.

“You’re weird.”

She was right.

Objects did not need to become memorials.

Thomas still traveled occasionally.

The suitcase rolled through airports.

Came home.

The important change:

Coming home was no longer a surprise children prayed for.

It was expected.

They knew when.

They knew how to reach him.

No adult controlled his messages.

No email filters.

No invisible gatekeeper.
