Chapter 12 - THE MONEY BEHIND REDWOODVanessa Cole cooperated before Rachel did.

Her attorney made the choice.
Hartwell Family Guidance had received $26,000 from Emily’s trust.
Vanessa admitted the relationship with Redwood Ridge.
She admitted not disclosing that Rachel was her sister.
She denied understanding the severity of Rachel’s treatment of Emily.
Messages contradicted parts.
Vanessa:
Need stronger documentation if Beacon is going to approve residential.
Rachel:
I have video.
Vanessa:
Emotional outbursts aren’t enough. Safety concern is better.
Rachel:
Working on it.
Vanessa’s attorney tried to frame “working on it” as gathering records.
Maybe.
Then another:
Rachel:
Lucas can get a reaction out of her in five minutes.
Vanessa:
Don’t be stupid.
Rachel:
Relax. Nobody’s hurting anyone.
Thomas stared.
She knew.
Maybe not patio specifics.
But she knew Rachel used Lucas to provoke reactions.
Vanessa admitted she expected a lucrative contract if Emily entered Redwood.
Did Rachel receive money?
Not directly.
But Rachel had discussed joining Hartwell as a partner after Emily’s placement.
Draft ownership:
Rachel 35%.
Vanessa 65%.
Projected first-year revenue from Bennett-family services:
$238,000.
Emily’s trust would be the client.
Thomas felt disgusted.
A child’s distress converted into a family business.
Yet Eleanor warned:
“Don’t oversimplify motive.”
Rachel also wanted control.
Status.
Family restructuring.
Financial motive strengthened the case but probably did not explain everything.
Thomas agreed.
