Chapter 28 - EMILY AT FOURTEENFour years later, Emily was fourteen.

Her knees had no marks.

She barely remembered the physical pain accurately.

She remembered humiliation more.

Rachel laughing.

Thomas’s suitcase falling.

“Daddy.”

The word ripping out of her.

She still saw Rachel occasionally through therapeutic meetings she chose herself.

Not mother-daughter reconciliation.

Structured.

Limited.

Some sessions went well.

Some ended early.

Emily learned she could leave.

That power mattered.

Lucas, eleven, lived primarily with Thomas and had regular contact with Rachel under revised custody arrangements.

He loved her.

He also challenged her now.

When she said:

“Emily never accepted me.”

Lucas answered:

“That’s not why you did it.”
