Chapter 23 - RACHEL’S LETTER TO EMILYA year later, Rachel wrote Emily a letter through Dr. Markham.

First draft rejected.
Too much explanation.
Too much:
I was trying to help.
I felt excluded.
Your father undermined me.
Dr. Markham told Rachel:
“Emily does not need your defense.”
Second draft:
Emily, I treated your grief like disobedience.
I made you responsible for Lucas’s feelings.
I forced you into punishments that embarrassed and hurt you.
I recorded your reactions without showing what I did first.
I tried to make your father believe you needed to leave home.
That was wrong.
Emily read it.
Then:
“She didn’t say the patio.”
Dr. Markham asked:
“Do you need that?”
“Yes.”
Rachel rewrote.
I made you crawl on the patio when your knees hurt. I told Lucas to sit on your back. I laughed. I am ashamed of that.
Emily cried.
May you like
Not because she forgave.
Because reality was finally written correctly.
