record

Chapter 13 - THE DIVORCE PAPERSOlivia filed quickly.

Not impulsively.

Methodically.

Her attorney, Rachel Kim, reviewed finances.

The house was marital property with documented disproportionate down payment from Olivia’s premarital funds.

Those records mattered.

Mark initially wanted house.

Lorraine insisted.

“It’s Whitfield home.”

Olivia almost challenged from anger.

Then Rachel asked:

“Do you want it?”

Olivia thought of kitchen.

Lorraine.

Mark’s affair.

Chloe’s cheek.

“No.”

So negotiations.

Olivia received substantial portion of equity reflecting contribution and marital share.

Mark refinanced to buy her out.

To do so he took larger mortgage.

Lorraine helped with some of her own investments.

They kept house.

Olivia took cash settlement, retirement share, and left.

Lorraine saw it as victory.

“She took money and ran.”

Actually Olivia recovered only part of what she had put into their life.

But enough.

Enough to begin again.

Mark moved Vanessa into house four months after separation.

Too soon.

Lorraine encouraged.

“Stop living in past.”

Vanessa redecorated kitchen Olivia paid for.

Replaced dining table.

Removed Chloe’s photographs.

Mark watched.

Said nothing.

Pattern.

Again.

When divorce became final, Olivia signed with steady hand.

Mark asked outside courthouse:

“Is this really what you want?”

Olivia looked at him.

“No.”

He brightened.

Then she continued:

“I wanted husband who protected us.”

“I don’t have that.”

“So this is what I choose.”

May you like

Mark cried.

Olivia walked away.
