Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN AT MARK’S OFFICEVanessa Langford arrived at Whitfield & Pierce in March.

Thirty-three.
Beautiful.
Polished.
New director of strategic partnerships.
She drove a black Mercedes.
Wore watches Mark recognized.
Mentioned summers in Nantucket.
A family trust.
Investments.
Mark was fascinated.
Vanessa made him feel important.
When he closed a deal she said:
“You’re too good for this position.”
When he complained about Olivia’s old career:
“It must be hard being married to someone competitive.”
Olivia had never competed.
But Mark liked hearing it.
He began telling Vanessa things he never told wife.
“My mother thinks Olivia doesn’t respect me.”
Vanessa:
“Does she?”
Mark:
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa smiled.
“You deserve to feel like the man in your own house.”
That sentence hooked him.
With Olivia, Mark often felt behind.
With Vanessa, he felt admired.
What he did not notice was Vanessa asked very specific questions.
House value.
Mortgage balance.
Family investments.
Lorraine’s finances.
Mark’s access to retirement accounts.
At first she framed it casually.
She came from money.
Money talk was normal.
Then emotional affair became physical.
Mark told himself Olivia had “checked out.”
Olivia was home caring for Chloe.
Cooking.
Cleaning.
Managing appointments.
Trying freelance work late at night.
He called that checked out.
Because admitting she had sacrificed for him would make betrayal harder to justify.
Vanessa gave him an easier story.
May you like
“You two grew apart.”
Mark repeated it until it sounded true.
