Chapter 6 - WHEN HER MONEY BECAME HIS HOUSEThe first six months at home felt almost peaceful.

Then language changed.
Mark came home tired.
Olivia asked about unexpected charge.
He joked:
“My paycheck, my problem.”
She froze.
He apologized immediately.
But words had appeared somewhere inside him before they came out.
Lorraine became worse.
“You’re lucky Mark works so hard.”
Olivia looked around kitchen renovated with her money.
“Yes.”
“He carries this entire household.”
Olivia almost laughed.
“Does he?”
Lorraine’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing.”
Olivia still had investments.
Savings had dropped because house consumed much.
She retained around $90,000 plus retirement.
But no current income.
Every month she felt independence shrink.
One afternoon Lorraine told friend:
“Olivia decided career wasn’t for her.”
Olivia corrected.
“I was doing very well.”
Lorraine smiled.
“Of course.”
That smile was worse than argument.
Mark heard.
Said nothing.
Another dinner:
“My son pays for this house.”
Olivia put fork down.
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“Mom…”
Finally.
Lorraine:
“What?”
Mark stopped.
Olivia waited.
Nothing.
Later bedroom:
“Why didn’t you correct her?”
“She knows you put money down.”
“She said you pay for house.”
“I pay mortgage.”
“With down payment I earned.”
“Why are you keeping score?”
Olivia stared.
“I’m not.”
“Your mother is rewriting history.”
Mark became defensive.
“You always do this.”
“Do what?”
“Make money the proof you’re better.”
Her mouth opened.
She had never said she was better.
But Mark heard superiority even where none existed.
That night Olivia understood something.
He had not needed her to brag.
