Chapter 15 - VANESSA’S “FAMILY MONEY”Vanessa’s wealth existed mostly in stories.

The Mercedes was leased through company.

The condo belonged to an investor she once dated.

Her “lake house share” was one vacation week she had access to through friend.

Langford Capital was founded by a distant uncle who barely knew her.

She had no meaningful trust.

She had debts.

Large ones.

But Vanessa understood wealthy appearances.

More importantly, she understood insecure people.

Mark wanted to feel successful.

Lorraine wanted wealthy daughter-in-law.

So Vanessa became exactly that.

Then she introduced opportunity.

A private real-estate fund.

“Family connections.”

“Off-market deals.”

“Guaranteed preferred returns.”

Mark was skeptical initially.

Vanessa laughed.

“This is why you stay middle management.”

He bristled.

She touched arm.

“I’m teasing.”

But wound opened.

Lorraine invested $200,000.

First quarterly statement showed strong gain.

Then she added $150,000.

Mark invested $75,000.

Returns appeared.

Vanessa encouraged more.

“Why let house equity sit?”

Mark hesitated.

House was heavily mortgaged after Olivia buyout.

But still valuable.

Vanessa said:

“You’re paying bank while money sleeps.”

Lorraine agreed.

“Olivia always thought too conservatively.”

That was false.

Olivia had simply understood risk.

They refinanced again.

Pulled equity.

$420,000.

Transferred into Vanessa’s fund.

The statements continued showing profit.

No one asked why withdrawals were difficult.

Vanessa said lockup period.

Professional language.

Confidence.

Lorraine loved hearing words she barely understood.

May you like

Because they made her feel wealthy.

And Vanessa knew exactly how to make pride sign paperwork.
