Chapter 20 - NO ONE CAME TO SAVE THEMMark called Olivia once.

He stared at her contact for ten minutes before pressing.
She answered because number still saved.
“Hello?”
“Olivia.”
She recognized tone.
“What happened?”
He told part.
Vanessa gone.
Money.
House.
Lorraine.
Olivia listened silently.
Then Mark said:
“I don’t know what to do.”
Years earlier that sentence would have activated her.
She would have built spreadsheet.
Called bank.
Found lawyer.
Fixed.
This time:
“I’m sorry this happened.”
Mark waited.
That was all.
“Olivia…”
“Yes?”
“I thought maybe you knew someone who could…”
She closed eyes.
There.
Rescue.
Again.
“I can send you name of attorney.”
“Could you call him?”
“No.”
Silence.
“I’m sorry.”
“I understand.”
She sent contact.
Did not make call.
Did not lend money.
Did not offer home.
This was not revenge.
It was boundary.
Mark had spent years learning someone would clean up consequences.
His mother.
His wife.
Then Vanessa promised wealth.
Now no one.
He had to stand.
Lorraine was furious.
“She could help.”
Mark looked at mother.
“She already did.”
“What?”
“She bought that house.”
Lorraine went silent.
“She paid most down payment.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Mark’s voice cracked.
“You knew and still told her I provided everything.”
Lorraine looked away.
For first time, shame.
Mark continued:
“We lost house she built.”
His mother whispered:
“Vanessa stole it.”
“No.”
“She stole money.”
May you like
“We handed her house.”
Difference.
