Chapter 2 - THE BAG WAS ALREADY PACKEDOlivia drove forty minutes without realizing where she was going.

Chloe fell asleep in her car seat after twenty.
At a red light, Olivia looked in rearview mirror.
The handprint was still visible.
Her stomach twisted.
“I’m sorry, baby.”
Chloe slept.
Olivia eventually stopped outside a small furnished apartment belonging to her old college friend, Dana Mercer.
Dana opened door and looked from Olivia to Chloe.
“What happened?”
Olivia started crying.
Not loudly.
Almost angrily.
“I left him.”
Dana did not ask whether she was sure.
“Come inside.”
The canvas bag contained clothes for Olivia and Chloe for four days.
Toothbrushes.
Chloe’s medicine.
Birth certificate.
Olivia’s passport.
Laptop.
Copies of financial statements.
And screenshots.
Dozens of them.
Dana watched Olivia remove the folder.
“What are those?”
Olivia sat.
“Why I packed.”
Three days earlier Olivia had borrowed Mark’s tablet because Chloe wanted cartoons.
The tablet synchronized with his phone.
A message appeared.
VANESSA: I miss you already.
Olivia froze.
Then another.
VANESSA: Your mother was right. You deserve a woman who understands your ambition.
Olivia had stared until screen blurred.
There were months of messages.
Private lunches.
Hotel reservations.
Late-night calls Mark described as “client meetings.”
Photographs of Vanessa Langford inside Mark’s car.
One taken inside a bedroom Olivia did not recognize.
No explicit image was needed.
The relationship was obvious.
Worse—
Lorraine knew.
A message from Mark:
Mom likes you more than Olivia.
Vanessa:
Your mother has taste.
Then:
She said once the divorce is done, we can stop hiding.
Olivia had packed that evening.
She planned to confront Mark after Lorraine’s birthday lunch.
Not in front of guests.
Not with Chloe nearby.
She wanted one final afternoon to confirm whether Mark had anything honest left.
Instead she returned from helping in kitchen and found her daughter with a handprint.
And Mark watching his phone.
Dana read several screenshots.
“Oh my God.”
Olivia stared at wall.
“He cheated.”
Dana nodded.
“But that isn’t why you look destroyed.”
Olivia’s voice became quieter.
“I gave up everything for him.”
And that was the part Mark had forgotten.
Before she became the woman Lorraine called lazy—

Olivia had been the highest earner in the marriage.
By far.
