Olivia allowed some contact initially because Chloe loved him.
Mark visited twice.
Then Vanessa became uncomfortable.
“She’s not your daughter.”
Same sentence Lorraine had used.
Mark looked at her.
“She thinks of me like family.”
“That’s Olivia keeping you attached.”
He told himself he would call later.
Weeks passed.
Chloe stopped asking.
One day Olivia found drawing.
Three stick figures.
Mommy.
Chloe.
A blank space scribbled over.
“Who was there?”
Chloe shrugged.
Olivia knew.
That hurt more than Mark leaving Olivia.
Adults can understand betrayal.
Children just experience disappearance.
Olivia stopped facilitating.
Not as punishment.
Protection.
Years later Mark would say losing Chloe was one of greatest regrets.
But regret after neglect doesn’t restore childhood.
While Mark drifted, Olivia built.
She attended school events.
Client calls at night.
Hired help when needed.
Never pretended doing everything alone was virtue.
She learned difference between independence and isolation.
