Chapter 24 - MARK LEARNED TO EARN LESSMark took job at regional logistics company.

Salary modest.
Far below what Olivia earned.
At first shame returned.
Then he forced himself to examine it.
His manager was a woman younger than him.
Excellent.
Old Mark would have resented.
New Mark watched, learned.
He stopped telling himself someone else’s success diminished him.
He moved into separate apartment eventually.
Lorraine found senior community she could afford with remaining Social Security and pension.
They stopped living emotionally fused.
For first time Mark said no to mother without rage.
She survived.
So did he.
He attended therapy.
No magical transformation.
Just slow.
He wrote Chloe birthday cards but sent only through Olivia with permission.
No pressure.
No “Dad.”
Just:
I hope you have a good birthday. — Mark
One year Chloe asked:
“Can I see him?”
Olivia arranged public lunch.
Mark did not cry until afterward.
Chloe asked why he disappeared.
He answered:
“Because I was selfish and scared.”
No blaming Vanessa.
No blaming Lorraine.
No blaming Olivia.
Chloe:
“Were you scared of Grandma?”
Mark almost smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“That’s weird.”
“Yes.”
Children simplify what adults complicate.
Then:
“Are you still scared?”
“Less.”
“Good.”
She ate fries.
That was all.
Relationship did not return to what it was.
It became something new.
Limited.

Honest.
Earned.
