Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OLIVIA PAID FORThe Whitfield house looked like success.
Four bedrooms.
Stone façade.
Tree-lined street.
A kitchen Lorraine called “proper.”
The price was $1.35 million.
Mark could not afford down payment.
Olivia could.
She put in $360,000 from savings.
Mark contributed $55,000.
Lorraine contributed nothing.
But Lorraine was involved in every decision.
“This is where Whitfields establish roots.”
“The dining room is perfect for holidays.”
“Mark needs an office facing front.”
Olivia wanted smaller property.
Mark wanted this one.
Eventually she agreed.
Then paperwork.
Lorraine said something Olivia remembered years later.
“Put everything jointly, of course.”
That sounded fair.
Then:
“Mark should handle mortgage. Men need ownership in their home.”
Olivia smiled.
“It’s both of ours.”
Lorraine replied:
“Technically.”
That word bothered her.
Still, Olivia signed.
She was married.
She trusted husband.
Over next two years Olivia paid most renovations too.
Roof.
Kitchen.
Nursery conversion.
Landscaping.
Mark’s income covered mortgage plus ordinary expenses.
But without Olivia’s cash, house never existed.
Then Chloe entered their lives full-time.
Chloe was Olivia’s daughter from a relationship before Mark.
Her biological father had little involvement.
Mark initially loved her.
At eighteen months Chloe called him “Ma.”
Eventually “Mark.”
Then almost “Daddy.”
Mark cried first time.
He told Olivia:
“I don’t care whose DNA she has.”
Lorraine did.
She never said “my granddaughter.”
Only:
“Chloe.”
At Christmas she gave Mark’s cousin’s child a silver ornament engraved:
WHITFIELD GRANDCHILD 2022
Chloe received stuffed bear.
Olivia noticed.
Mark said:
“Don’t make it a thing.”
There would be hundreds of those sentences.
Don’t make it a thing.
Let Mom have this.
She’s old-fashioned.
She doesn’t mean it.
Keep peace.
May you like
Olivia kept peace so long she eventually realized peace meant only one person was allowed to be upset.
Lorraine.
