Chapter 1 - HER OWN BIRTHDAYNatalie Foster had been standing at the sink for almost forty minutes when her brother arrived.

Her left arm was beginning to ache from holding Ella.

The one-year-old had stopped fussing and now rested her cheek against Natalie’s shoulder, exhausted by noise from thirty guests gathered in the adjoining party room.

With her right hand, Natalie washed plate after plate.

Champagne glasses.

Serving trays.

Cake forks.

Her white apron was soaked through.

Underneath it, she was still wearing the champagne-colored dress Brandon had bought for her birthday.

A dress meant for a party she had barely attended.

Marjorie Hale entered kitchen carrying another tray.

She dropped it beside sink.

“Those too.”

Natalie stared at pile.

“Marjorie, Ella needs to sleep.”

“Then finish faster.”

Natalie looked toward husband.

Brandon stood only several feet away, phone in hand.

He had heard everything.

She waited.

He said nothing.

“Brandon.”

He glanced up.

“You’re not going to say anything?”

His eyes moved toward his mother.

Then floor.

That hurt more than Marjorie’s words.

Marjorie smiled.

“Keep washing. You’re not a guest.”

Natalie’s fingers tightened around sponge.

She could tolerate insults.

She had tolerated many.

But something about hearing them on her thirtieth birthday while her daughter slept against her made humiliation sharper.

Then party-room doors opened.

Victor Foster walked in carrying a white cake.

At first, he smiled.

A rare smile.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NATALIE” was written across frosting.

Then he saw kitchen.

His sister.

Wet apron.

Baby in her arms.

Dirty dishes.

Brandon beside her.

Marjorie watching.

Victor’s smile vanished.

Two men near champagne table stopped talking.

A banker named Howard Bell quietly put his glass down.

Someone whispered:

“That’s Victor Foster.”

Victor heard none of them.

Or acted as if he didn’t.

He placed cake carefully on table.

Then walked straight to sister.

He did not shout.

That made Brandon more nervous.

Victor looked at Natalie’s wet hands.

“How long?”

Natalie tried to smile.

“Vic, it’s okay.”

His eyes met hers.

“I didn’t ask if it was okay.”

Silence.

He gently untied soaked apron with one hand while Natalie continued holding Ella.

Then he took dish towel and placed it beside sink.

“Stop washing.”

Marjorie stepped forward.

“She’s nearly finished.”

Victor did not even look at her.

He looked at Brandon.

“Why is my sister washing your family’s dishes while holding your daughter?”

Brandon swallowed.

“It’s complicated.”

Victor’s face remained calm.

“No.”

A beat.

“Business is complicated.”

He pointed once toward Natalie.

“This is simple.”

Brandon’s face reddened.

Marjorie snapped:

“This is a Hale family matter.”

Only then did Victor turn toward her.

His expression was almost polite.

“Mrs. Hale.”

“You think you can walk into my home and threaten me?”

“No.”

Victor reached inside jacket.

“I’m removing my help.”

Marjorie laughed.

She still did not understand.

Victor unlocked phone.

Selected contact.

Brandon accidentally saw name.

His face went white.

“Victor…”

Victor raised phone.

“It’s me.”

The room became silent.

“Cancel every deal with the Hale family.”

Brandon rushed one step forward.

“Victor, wait!”

Victor lowered phone slightly and looked at him.

For first time that evening, something dangerous appeared in his eyes.

“Now you found your voice?”

No one moved.

Natalie stared at husband.

Marjorie’s smile disappeared.

Victor put phone back to ear.

And before he could continue—

Ella woke.

She looked at Victor.

Reached one tiny hand toward him.

Victor’s entire face changed.

He touched niece’s fingers.

Softly.

Then his eyes returned to Brandon.

Cold again.

That was the moment the Hale family finally understood something Natalie had known almost all her life.

Victor Foster had only one weakness.

May you like

His little sister.

And they had humiliated her in front of him.
