Chapter 8 - THE BIRTHDAY BRANDON FORGOT TWICENatalie’s twenty-eighth birthday had been dinner at restaurant Marjorie chose.

Her twenty-ninth became charity gala Brandon’s mother insisted they attend.

Her thirtieth was supposed to be different.

Brandon promised:

“This one is yours.”

Then Marjorie moved party to Hale mansion.

Invited her own guests.

Selected menu.

Changed decorations.

Even changed cake flavor.

Victor had asked Natalie one week before:

“What do you want?”

“Nothing big.”

“Cake?”

“Vanilla.”

“What kind?”

“White cake. Strawberries.”

Victor ordered it personally.

The cake he carried into mansion was only thing at party Natalie had actually chosen.

Marjorie’s cake was chocolate.

Natalie hated chocolate cake.

After leaving mansion, Victor placed white cake in refrigerator.

He did not make Natalie blow candles that night.

She was exhausted.

Next morning Ella woke early.

Victor entered kitchen carrying cake.

One candle.

Natalie laughed.

“I’m thirty. That’s cheating.”

“One represents efficiency.”

“Awful.”

“Blow.”

Natalie looked at candle.

Then stopped.

She suddenly cried.

Victor sat.

“What?”

“No one asked me what cake I wanted yesterday.”

He looked down.

“This one right?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Then he pushed cake closer.

Natalie didn’t blow.

“Not yet.”

Victor nodded.

No pressure.

That became symbolic.

She would blow candles when she decided what birthday meant.

Not when crowd demanded.

Meanwhile Marjorie’s party photographs were spreading socially.

Some showed Natalie washing dishes in background.

People noticed.

One guest posted innocent clip.

Comments:

“Why is birthday girl at sink?”

Marjorie panicked about embarrassment.

She ordered family PR consultant to contact Natalie requesting statement saying she “voluntarily helped clean.”

Natalie refused.

Brandon begged.

“Just one sentence.”

“No.”

“It would calm things down.”

“I don’t want to lie.”

“It’s not lying. You were helping.”

Natalie stared.

“You watched your mother order me.”

Brandon closed eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then stop rewriting it.”

That line hit.

Brandon had always softened Marjorie.

“She didn’t mean it.”

“She’s old-fashioned.”

“She was stressed.”

“She loves differently.”

Every euphemism erased Natalie’s experience.

This time she refused.

Then Victor heard PR team attempted contact.

He called Brandon.

“If one person pressures my sister to make statement for Hale reputation, every remaining Foster-linked public partnership ends.”

Brandon exploded.

“You can’t keep threatening us.”

Victor’s voice remained calm.

“I’m telling you my boundary.”

“Your family controls everything!”

“No.”

“My sister controls her own words.”

There was difference.

Victor hung up.

Natalie later learned.

“Did you threaten him?”

“No.”

“What did you say?”

He told.

She smiled.

“You’re impossible.”

“You said no.”

“I made sure no remained no.”

That was how Victor protected.

He did not choose for her.

He protected space around choice.
