Chapter 4 - THE FIRST MAN SHE CALLEDWhen Natalie was twenty, she had a boyfriend named Eric Lawson.

Smart.
Charming.
Ambitious.
And unfaithful.
Natalie found out through a photograph.
When she confronted him, Eric laughed.
“You’re too sensitive.”
Then:
“No one else will put up with you.”
Natalie called Victor at 1:47 a.m.
He answered on first ring.
“Vic…”
“Where are you?”
Her apartment.
Victor arrived with coffee and two breakfast sandwiches.
He did not ask for Eric’s address.
He did not call friends.
He sat on floor beside Natalie until sunrise.
At 4 a.m. she asked:
“Aren’t you going to do something?”
“I am.”
“What?”
“I’m making sure you don’t go back.”
Natalie laughed through tears.
Victor looked at her.
“You can survive someone not choosing you.”
“What you cannot survive is teaching yourself humiliation equals love.”
She never returned to Eric.
Years later Eric applied for financing through firm associated with Victor.
Victor approved committee reviewing it normally.
Natalie discovered and was shocked.
“You could’ve blocked him.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because he cheated on you.”
“That makes him bad boyfriend.”
“It doesn’t automatically make his business bad.”
Victor protected sister without converting world into revenge machine.
That memory returned now because Brandon was different.
Eric had betrayed Natalie once.
Brandon had betrayed her slowly.
By silence.
By choosing peace with his mother over dignity of his wife.
Natalie wondered which hurt more.
Then phone rang.
Brandon.
She did not answer.
Again.
Again.
Victor glanced.
“Want me to block him?”
“No.”
“Then don’t.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
Natalie laughed faintly.
“You’re supposed to be scary.”
“I’m terrifying.”
“You make awful tea.”
“Both can be true.”
She finally answered fourth call.
“Hello.”
Brandon sounded exhausted.
“Natalie, please come home.”
“No.”
“We need to talk.”
“We can talk tomorrow.”
“Victor is destroying company.”
Victor’s eyes flickered.
Natalie’s face went still.
“Is that why you called?”
“No.”
“Then why did you mention him before asking about Ella?”
Silence.
Brandon:
“How is she?”
“Asleep.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Mom is upset.”
Natalie laughed once.
Not humor.
“Of course.”
“Natalie, she didn’t mean—”
“Stop.”
Brandon went silent.
“Do not explain your mother to me tonight.”
“She humiliated me.”
“You watched.”
“That is what I’m thinking about.”
Brandon’s voice softened.
“I’m sorry.”
Natalie closed eyes.
She wanted those words.
For years.
Now they arrived only after Victor called bank.
She could not tell whether they belonged to marriage or balance sheet.
“I’ll talk tomorrow.”
She hung up.
Victor said nothing.
Natalie looked at him.
“Say it.”
“What?”
“You don’t like him.”
Victor paused.
“I liked who he was when he married you.”
“And now?”
“I don’t know who he is.”
That answer scared her more than anger.
Victor did not hate easily.
He simply stopped trusting.
May you like
And in business—
that was much more expensive.
