Chapter 21 - MARJORIE’S LAST HUMILIATIONHale family held annual winter charity dinner.

Brandon asked Natalie if she would attend separately.
“No.”
He accepted.
Marjorie did not.
During dinner, after wine, she told guests:
“Natalie is being influenced by brother.”
Eleanor Price heard.
“So she has no mind of her own?”
Marjorie tried recover.
“That’s not what I mean.”
Then:
“Victor always made her dependent.”
Howard Bell laughed softly.
Marjorie snapped:
“What?”
Howard:
“Mrs. Hale, Natalie is only person in this situation who has repeatedly refused Victor’s money and intervention.”
Conversation shifted.
Marjorie became defensive.
Then worst line:
“Ella will always be Hale first.”
Silence.
Eleanor asked:
“What does that mean?”
Marjorie realized too late.
A guest recorded.
Clip spread privately before reaching Natalie.
Natalie watched once.
She did not cry.
She called Marjorie.
“Do not speak about my daughter publicly again.”
Marjorie:
“I was defending family.”
“Ella is not your family property.”
“Natalie—”
“If you mention her in another interview, dinner, or public statement, all communication goes through lawyers.”
Marjorie laughed bitterly.
“Victor teach you that?”
Natalie answered:
“No.”
“You did.”
Then hung up.
Victor heard later.
He smiled.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re proud.”
“Maybe.”
“Don’t be weird.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Marjorie had finally pushed Natalie beyond seeking approval.
That was important payoff.
