Chapter 18 - BRANDON CHOSE A SIDEThe crisis came at Hale board meeting.

Marjorie arrived uninvited.

She still owned meaningful shares.

She demanded Brandon call Victor.

“I won’t.”

“You have no choice.”

“I do.”

“You’re going to let family lose everything for wife who left you?”

Brandon’s face changed.

Boardroom went silent.

“Do not talk about Natalie that way.”

Marjorie stared.

“Excuse me?”

Brandon stood.

“I said no.”

“You wouldn’t have this company without me.”

“I know.”

“And you wouldn’t have current financing history without Victor.”

“I know.”

“So stop pretending you built yourself.”

Brandon breathed.

“I’m not pretending anymore.”

He presented restructuring.

Sell one development.

Reduce leverage.

Bring independent CEO for operations.

Marjorie hated.

“It makes us smaller.”

“Yes.”

“We are Hales.”

“We are overleveraged.”

Reality versus image.

She accused Victor of forcing.

Brandon replied:

“Victor hasn’t called me in two weeks.”

That surprised everyone.

This was Brandon’s decision.

Marjorie looked at son.

“You’re choosing her.”

“No.”

“I’m choosing not to live terrified of disappointing you.”

That was bigger than marriage.

Marjorie’s face collapsed.

Brandon continued:

“I love you.”

“But I will not let you run my marriage or company anymore.”

“If Natalie never comes back, this still changes.”

That was right sentence.

Because growth could not be strategy to win wife.

Marjorie left.

Board approved restructuring narrowly.

Hale Group would survive.

Smaller.

Less glamorous.

More real.

When Natalie learned, she called Victor.

“Did you tell him what to do?”

“No.”

“Did Jonathan?”

“Maybe numbers did.”

She smiled.

Brandon had finally stood without either mother or brother-in-law.

For first time, Natalie felt possibility.

Not decision.

Possibility.
