Chapter 19 - THE SECRET BRANDON COULDN’T HIDEThen Natalie learned one more truth.

Not from Victor.
From accountant.
During marital financial disclosure Brandon voluntarily began, there was a line:
Foster Family Strategic Relationship — goodwill contribution estimate.
Natalie asked.
Brandon explained.
Years ago, when Hale Group needed investor confidence, advisors suggested Brandon’s marriage into Foster family was itself reputational strength.
Nothing illegal.
But Brandon allowed analysts to imply long-term alignment.
Natalie’s name became invisible asset.
Meanwhile at home Marjorie repeatedly told Natalie:
“You don’t contribute.”
Natalie stared at document.
“Did you ever tell her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She would’ve been humiliated.”
Natalie laughed bitterly.
“So instead I was.”
Brandon began:
“I didn’t think—”
“Yes.”
“That is problem.”
Then Natalie asked hardest question.
“Did you marry me because of my family?”
Brandon went pale.
“No.”
She watched.
He continued:
“I met you before I knew who Victor was.”
True.
Their first date happened after museum fundraiser; he knew surname not importance.
“When did you know?”
“Third date.”
“Did it matter?”
Brandon hesitated.
Natalie’s heart sank.
“Answer.”
“It made future feel safer.”
There.
Not reason for love.
But benefit.
“Did your mother encourage marriage more after?”
“Yes.”
Natalie closed eyes.
Marjorie had initially been cool toward her.
Then suddenly enthusiastic.
Now why.
Not because she loved Natalie.
Because Foster connection helped Hale stability.
That hypocrisy pushed anger to new peak.
Marjorie humiliated woman whose name helped her family.
Natalie stood.
“Leave.”
Brandon didn’t argue.
At door:
“I loved you.”
Natalie:
“I believe that.”
That surprised him.
“Then?”
“Love isn’t only question.”
“Character is.”
He left.
Natalie called Victor later.
“Did you know Marjorie encouraged marriage for business?”
“No.”
She believed.
Victor’s voice became cold.
“What do you want me to do?”
There it was again.
Always.
Natalie thought.
“Nothing.”
“Okay.”
