Chapter 22 - THE APRONNatalie returned to Hale mansion once.

To collect remaining personal things.
Brandon arranged Marjorie absent.
Audrey? no relation to other story—avoid. House manager Denise Clark helped.
Kitchen looked same.
Sink empty.
Natalie opened pantry.
There, hanging behind door—
wet white birthday apron had dried stiff.
She stared.
Brandon entered.
“I told staff not to throw it out.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Natalie removed apron.
Held it.
Then placed on counter.
Brandon said:
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
He looked surprised.
“Does that mean—”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I believe you’re sorry.”
“That doesn’t mean I’m ready to come home.”
He accepted.
Then Natalie asked:
“Why didn’t you defend me that night?”
Brandon had answered before.
Fear.
Habit.
Mother.
But now deeper:
“Because part of me thought it was easier if you absorbed her anger.”
Natalie’s eyes filled.
Finally.
Truth.
“She would attack me if I challenged her.”
“So you let her attack me.”
“Yes.”
He cried.
Natalie did not comfort immediately.
Some truths deserve space.
Then Brandon said:
“I became her shield by making you mine.”
Exactly.
That was most honest thing he’d said.
Natalie removed apron.
Folded once.
Then put into trash.
Brandon watched.
“You don’t want it?”
“No.”
“It’s evidence of what happened.”
“I remember.”
She did not need relic.
As she walked out, Brandon asked:
“Do you still love me?”
Natalie stopped.
“Yes.”
His face changed.
“But love isn’t enough for me to return to same marriage.”
She left.

Hope remained.
But old system ended.
