Chapter 24 - SHE FINALLY BLEW OUT THE CANDLESThree months after birthday, Natalie invited small group to Hudson Valley cottage.

Victor.

Ella.

Two friends.

No thirty guests.

No balloons everywhere.

No society names.

She baked cake herself.

It leaned.

Victor stared.

“That’s structurally unsound.”

“Shut up.”

Ella smashed frosting with hand.

Everyone laughed.

Then car arrived.

Brandon.

Natalie had invited him.

Victor looked at sister.

“You want me to leave?”

“No.”

“Want me to stay?”

“Yes.”

Simple.

Brandon entered carrying flowers.

He greeted Victor.

Victor nodded.

No tension performance.

Brandon had been attending counseling alone and with mother separately.

Hale Group stabilized after restructuring.

Smaller.

Profitable enough.

No Victor help.

That mattered.

Marjorie did not come.

She sent gift for Natalie and separate toy for Ella.

No note claiming Hale heritage.

Progress.

Natalie placed candles.

Thirty.

Victor:

“Finally.”

She smiled.

Brandon stood several feet away.

No assumption.

Ella in high chair.

Victor began singing badly.

Everyone joined.

Natalie looked around.

This was birthday.

Not because expensive.

Because nobody demanded performance.

Before blowing candles she looked at Victor.

He had protected her at sixteen.

At twenty.

At twenty-five by not interfering.

At wedding with simple warning.

He protected Brandon when marriage was young.

Protected her choice now by refusing to decide future for her.

Natalie realized his greatest gift was not fear he inspired.

It was safety he gave.

She blew candles.

Applause.

Ella screamed happily.

Brandon smiled.

Victor took photo.

Later Brandon asked privately:

“Can we start over?”

Natalie considered.

“Not move back.”

“Not pretend nothing happened.”

“Not become same marriage.”

“No.”

“What then?”

“Coffee.”

Brandon smiled.

“Coffee?”

“Next Tuesday.”

“I can do coffee.”

Natalie nodded.

That was all he got.

May you like

And this time—

he was grateful.
