The Poison That Was Never Found

The gunfire stopped as quickly as it had begun.
Henry remained on the floor.
Thomas whispered,
"Don't move."
Leo stood between them and the broken window.
Outside, footsteps disappeared into the darkness.
Thomas checked his shoulder.
Blood was visible.
"You've been hit."
"It's only a scratch."
Henry grabbed his phone.
"Call the police."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because we don't know who we can trust."
Henry stared at him.
The laboratory report lay between them.
"What did the poison do?"
"Stopped the heart."
"Could it be detected?"
"Only if the doctor knew what to look for."
Henry remembered Dr. Carter.
"She knew."
Thomas nodded.
"But someone changed the report."
"Who?"
"The original report was replaced."
Henry looked at the document.
"Where is the original?"
Thomas pointed toward the mausoleum wall.
Richard had hidden it.
They searched behind a stone panel.
Inside was a sealed medical envelope.
Henry opened it.
The original report confirmed poisoning.
But there was another detail.
The poison had been administered three days before Richard died.
That meant the killer had access to Richard long before the final night.
Henry suddenly remembered the funeral.
Hundreds of people had been around Richard during his final days.
Anyone could have approached him.
Then Thomas noticed something.
A signature on the medication log.
Victor Hale.
Henry's face hardened.
"Victor poisoned him."
Thomas shook his head.
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"Look at the date."
Henry did.
Victor had signed the log.
But he had been overseas that day.

Someone had forged his signature.
The real killer was still hidden.
