Dr. Evelyn Carter had treated Richard Montgomery for almost twelve years.
She had also been the last doctor to see him alive.
Henry approached her.
"Doctor, why didn't you tell us about the second medical report?"
Evelyn looked toward Ethan.
Then toward Leo.
"I was told not to."
"By whom?"
She hesitated.
"Your grandfather."
Henry stared at her.
"Richard ordered another examination?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Evelyn lowered her voice.
"Three weeks before his death, Richard asked me a strange question."
"What question?"
"He asked whether a person could be poisoned without leaving obvious traces."
Henry felt cold.
"What did you tell him?"
"That some substances could be difficult to detect."
"Did he think someone was trying to kill him?"
Evelyn looked directly at Henry.
"He didn't think."
"He knew."
Silence.
Henry glanced toward the cemetery.
Leo was still standing beside the coffin.
"What happened next?"
Evelyn reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"Richard gave me this."
Henry took it.
There was only one sentence written on the front.
FOR HENRY — AFTER MY FUNERAL.
His hands trembled.
"Why didn't you give it to me earlier?"
"Because Richard told me to wait."
"Until when?"
Evelyn looked toward Leo.
"Until the lion refused to leave his coffin."
Henry slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Richard standing beside a younger man Henry had never seen before.
On the back, Richard had written four words:
HE KNOWS WHY I DIED.
Henry looked up.
"Who is this man?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know."
