The Final Piece of Evidence

Victor survived the shooting.

Police arrived minutes later.

But he refused to speak.

Henry sat beside him.

"Who shot you?"

Victor looked at him.

"Someone you trust."

Henry froze.

"Who?"

Victor whispered,

"Your mother."

Henry stood.

"No."

Victor smiled bitterly.

"You still believe everyone you love is innocent."

"She tried to protect me."

"She also helped build the system that killed your father."

Henry couldn't answer.

Victor handed him a small flash drive.

"This proves everything."

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Payments.

Secret accounts.

And one final transaction.

It had been made six days before Richard died.

The recipient was Thomas Blake.

Henry confronted the lawyer.

Thomas finally broke down.

He had accepted money from Victor.

But he claimed it was blackmail.

Victor had threatened to expose Thomas's own illegal activities.

Henry asked,

"Did you help kill my grandfather?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"Then who did?"

Thomas looked toward the door.

"Your mother."

Henry froze.

Thomas explained that Richard's medication had been contaminated during a private meeting with her.

But she hadn't intended to kill him.

She had been trying to frighten him into revealing the location of hidden evidence.

The poison had been added by someone else.

Someone who had manipulated her.

Henry whispered,

"Who?"

Thomas answered,

"Daniel."

Henry turned.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Leo didn't growl.

He simply stared.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I knew this day would come."
