## Chapter 1 — The Birthday Celebration
The Harrison estate looked like something from a magazine.
Nestled in the hills of Beverly Hills, the sprawling mansion overlooked the city as the golden California sunset painted the sky in shades of amber and rose. The perfectly manicured gardens had been transformed into an elegant birthday venue. White roses lined the stone pathways, crystal lanterns hung from ancient oak trees, and round tables draped in ivory linen shimmered beneath strings of warm lights.
Soft piano music drifted through the evening air while guests laughed over champagne.
Tonight was Emily Harrison's twenty-ninth birthday.
Although she was eight months pregnant, Emily insisted on celebrating with close family and friends. She wore a flowing champagne-colored maternity dress that highlighted her baby bump beautifully. Every guest who greeted her commented on how radiant she looked.
Ethan Harrison never let go of her hand for very long.
Whenever Emily needed another drink, another chair, or even a moment to rest, Ethan was already there before she asked.
"You've officially become overprotective," Emily teased with a smile.
Ethan laughed.
"I'm protecting both of you."
He gently rested his hand on her stomach.
Their unborn son kicked.
Emily laughed again.
"I think he's already impatient to meet his father."
Nearby, guests smiled as they watched the couple.
To everyone present, Ethan and Emily represented the perfect family.
Not everyone shared that happiness.
Standing several feet away, Victoria Hayes watched quietly while pretending to sip champagne.
She smiled whenever someone looked in her direction.
She complimented Emily's dress.
She congratulated Ethan.
She even helped organize the decorations.
No one noticed the bitterness hidden behind her polished smile.
Victoria had spent years comparing her life to Emily's.
Emily had the loving husband.
The beautiful home.
The successful business.
Now she was about to have the family's first grandchild.
Everything Victoria secretly believed should have belonged to her.
As applause erupted for the birthday toast, Victoria slowly walked toward Emily.
"You look absolutely beautiful," she said warmly.
Emily smiled.
"Thank you."
"It means a lot coming from you."
Victoria gently linked her arm with Emily's.
"Come."
"Let's stand closer to everyone for the photos."
Emily nodded without hesitation.
She trusted her sister-in-law completely.
Neither Ethan...
Nor anyone else...
Noticed the dangerous look that flashed across Victoria's face for less than a second.
The celebration continued beneath the warm evening sky.
No one realized that within moments...
One small push would change every life at the party forever.
