## Chapter 3 — Tears That Fooled Everyone
Victoria reached Emily first.
She dropped to her knees beside her.
Tears streamed down her face almost instantly.
"I'm sorry!"
"Oh my God..."
"I'm so sorry!"
Several guests hurried over.
One woman covered her mouth in horror.
Another called emergency services.
Emily struggled to breathe.
Pain shot through her lower back and abdomen.
She clutched her stomach.
The baby suddenly stopped moving.
Fear overwhelmed her.
Victoria gently brushed hair away from Emily's face.
"I didn't mean it."
"You slipped."
"I tried to catch you."
Her voice sounded completely sincere.
Even Ethan, running toward them as fast as he could, saw only a frightened woman desperately trying to help.
Victoria looked around frantically.
"Help me lift her."
"No."
Emily whispered weakly.
"Please..."
"My stomach..."
Victoria ignored her.
Instead, she carefully slid one arm beneath Emily's shoulder.
"It's okay."
"I've got you."
Several guests stepped backward, believing Victoria knew what she was doing.
Emily leaned heavily against her.
She could barely remain conscious.
Victoria glanced briefly toward Ethan.
He was still several steps away.
Perfect.
Everything was happening exactly as she wanted.
No one noticed the faint smile that disappeared from her lips almost immediately.
