Chapter 11 - THE PUNISHMENT ROOMBeatrice knew about hidden compartment behind restroom mirror because mansion renovations exposed it twenty years earlier.

An old service corridor.
Not a secret prison.
Storage.
Maintenance access.
She had it sealed except one latch disguised in molding.
When Camille caught Caleb listening, she dragged him toward Beatrice.
“He heard.”
Caleb struggled.
“Let me go.”
Beatrice’s face remained calm.
“You were spying.”
“No.”
“You were listening to private conversation.”
“I was walking.”
“You lie.”
“I’m telling Dad.”
That sentence changed everything.
Beatrice took his wrist.
“Come with me.”
Caleb thought he was being taken to office.
Instead east restroom.
Beatrice opened mirror panel.
“Inside.”
Caleb stared.
“No.”
“You need time to learn respect.”
“I’m not going.”
Camille whispered:
“Mom, maybe don’t—”
Beatrice turned.
“One hour.”
Camille looked away.
Beatrice forced Caleb into compartment without injuring him, but enough to terrify him.
He immediately tried coming out.
She shut door.
“Grandma!”
“Think about what happens when children eavesdrop.”
“I’m telling Dad!”
Beatrice’s face hardened.
“Maybe you should think about whether your father wants to hear one more problem caused by you.”
Caleb pounded.
“LET ME OUT!”
Beatrice walked away.
She intended, she later claimed, to release him after dinner.
But Audra began asking where he was.
Panic spread too quickly.
Beatrice made catastrophic choice.
If she opened room then, everyone would know.
So she lied.
“I thought he was with you.”
Camille stared at mother.
“Mom.”
Beatrice whispered:
“Quiet.”
One hour became night.
Night became morning.

Then police arrived.
And Beatrice became trapped by her own lie.
