Chapter 23 - THE CALL FROM MONTGOMERYNine months after leaving, Grant received call from Beatrice.

First direct since no-contact legal boundaries allowed adult communication.
He almost ignored.
Audra said:
“Your choice.”
He answered.
“Hello.”
Beatrice’s voice sounded older.
“Grant.”
“Yes.”
“Company needs you.”
He closed eyes.
“What happened?”
“Camille can’t manage operations.”
“Board is divided.”
“Callahan took two accounts.”
Grant almost smiled.
“Callahan won them.”
“Because of you.”
“Because they offered better terms.”
Beatrice snapped:
“You’re competing against your family.”
Grant’s voice stayed calm.
“My family is at home.”
Silence.
Then:
“I’m your mother.”
“Yes.”
“That hasn’t changed.”
“No.”
“Neither has what you did.”
Beatrice’s breathing changed.
“Caleb is fine.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“He survived.”
“That is not same.”
She had no answer.
Then:
“Come back. We can fix trust.”
Grant looked through office glass.
People working.
No portraits.
No inheritance.
“Keep it.”
Beatrice whispered:
“What?”
“The trust.”
“The position.”
“All of it.”
“I’m not coming back.”
He ended call.
May you like
No triumph.
Just clarity.
