Chapter 22 - THE JOB THAT WASN’T AN INHERITANCEGrant’s new office was smaller than his old private conference room.

He loved it.

No family portrait.

No grandfather’s name on wall.

No assistant calling him “Mr. Montgomery” because of lineage.

At Callahan, Grant had to prove himself.

Henry gave him authority but not worship.

First project stalled.

Grant made wrong forecast.

He admitted.

Fixed.

Second succeeded.

Third brought major savings.

Employees began trusting him because he worked.

Not surname.

At home Audra’s bookkeeping clients grew.

She started small consulting service for rural manufacturers—companies like those she knew from Kentucky.

Grant offered money.

She said:

“No.”

He smiled.

“Had to ask.”

“I know.”

She used her own earnings.

Within six months, Audra had four steady clients.

Caleb was doing better.

He still avoided dark closets.

Still hated closed spaces.

But he could look into mirror again if Grant stood nearby.

Healing was not montage.

It was Tuesday mornings.

School.

Therapy.

May you like

Nightmares less frequent.

Small victories.
