Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO HEARD HIMLucia had been told not to use east restroom during police activity.

On third day she ignored instruction.

She wanted somewhere quiet to cry.

Instead she heard Caleb.

That decision saved him.

At hospital, after rescue, Detective Maren Shaw interviewed Lucia.

“You’re certain the compartment was locked outside?”

“Yes.”

“Did you touch latch?”

“No. Mr. Montgomery saw.”

Grant sat nearby.

His face was stone.

Beatrice’s attorney arrived before Beatrice did.

That alone told Grant something.

At 8 p.m. Caleb woke.

He asked for Lucia.

Grant brought her.

Caleb hugged her.

“You heard me.”

Lucia cried.

“Yes.”

“I hit it a lot.”

“I know.”

Audra sat beside.

Grant stood farther back because child seemed overwhelmed.

Then Caleb saw Beatrice in hallway through glass.

His body changed instantly.

He pressed against Audra.

“No.”

Audra turned.

Grant turned.

Caleb whispered:

“Don’t let her in.”

Grant walked to door and closed blind.

“Okay.”

No question.

Later, when Caleb was calmer, detective asked:

“Can you tell us how you got behind mirror?”

Caleb stared at Grant.

Grant said:

“You don’t have to protect anyone.”

Caleb’s lip trembled.

“Grandma.”

Audra stopped breathing.

Grant’s eyes closed.

Detective remained calm.

“Grandma put you there?”

Caleb nodded.

“Was anyone else there?”

Long pause.

“Aunt Camille.”

Grant looked away.

Something inside him broke.
