Chapter 5 - THE NAMEGrant wanted to adopt Caleb legally.

It was his idea.

Audra hesitated because Ethan was alive.

But Ethan had not called in eight months.

He eventually consented after legal process.

Grant treated adoption as responsibility, not symbolism.

He met teachers.

Doctors.

Changed emergency contacts.

Attended court hearing.

When judge asked Caleb whether he understood, Caleb said:

“It means Grant is my dad on paper too.”

Everyone laughed.

Grant did not.

He cried.

After hearing, Caleb’s name became:

Caleb Bennett Montgomery.

They kept Bennett.

Grant insisted.

“You don’t erase where someone came from to prove they belong where they’re going.”

Audra loved him more for that.

Beatrice hated it.

At family dinner she stared at adoption certificate Grant proudly brought.

“So now he inherits?”

Grant looked up.

“That’s your first question?”

“I’m practical.”

“He’s my son.”

“Legally.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“And otherwise.”

Beatrice looked at Caleb across room.

“A signature doesn’t change blood.”

Grant stood.

“It changes responsibility.”

Then:

“And that’s enough for me.”

Beatrice never forgot.

Camille later cornered Audra.

“You really got everything, didn’t you?”

Audra frowned.

“What?”

“My brother.”

“The name.”

“Your kid gets trust benefits.”

“There are no trust benefits we asked for.”

Camille laughed.

“You country girls are good.”

Audra walked away.

She considered telling Grant.

Then saw him at breakfast next morning, laptop open, three conference calls waiting.

He looked exhausted.

May you like

She said nothing.

Again.
