Beatrice’s manager offered raise.
She refused.
She could not clean mirror again.
Grant heard through Audra.
He called.
“Do you need work?”
Lucia laughed sadly.
“Sir, you need work.”
“Fair.”
She found position at hotel.
Caleb asked to see her.
They met for lunch.
He gave Lucia drawing.
A mirror with giant red X.
Next to it, three stick figures holding hands.
“Who’s that?”
“You.”
“Mom.”
“Dad.”
Lucia pointed fourth figure.
“You forgot yourself.”
Caleb frowned.
“Oh.”
He added tiny person.
Lucia laughed.
Then he said:
“I thought you were angel.”
Lucia’s eyes filled.
“No, baby.”
“You were.”
She hugged him.
Grant watched.
He realized rescue did not belong to rich father.
It belonged to cleaner who heard a child and acted.
Power had failed.
