Chapter 6 - THE NECKLACEThe necklace belonged to Grant’s grandmother.

Diamond and emerald.

Rare.

More sentimental than valuable to family.

It disappeared during Christmas weekend.

Beatrice panicked.

Camille cried.

Staff searched.

Two hours later Camille emerged from Audra’s bedroom holding velvet box.

“I found it.”

The room went silent.

Audra stared.

“Where?”

“Your drawer.”

“That’s impossible.”

Beatrice’s face turned cold.

“Audra.”

“I didn’t take it.”

“No one is accusing—”

“Yes, you are.”

Grant returned from airport early.

He walked into chaos.

“What happened?”

Beatrice explained.

Grant listened.

Then asked:

“Camera.”

Camille blinked.

“What?”

“Hallway camera.”

Beatrice:

“Grant, surely—”

“Pull footage.”

Security did.

At 2:17 p.m., Camille entered Audra’s room carrying something small.

At 2:21, she exited without it.

The necklace was reported missing at 3:00.

Grant looked at sister.

Camille began crying.

“I was putting it somewhere safe.”

“In Audra’s drawer?”

“I forgot!”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Why were you in her room?”

“Mom asked me to get—”

Beatrice interrupted.

“Enough. It was a misunderstanding.”

Grant looked at mother.

“A misunderstanding that made my wife look like thief.”

Camille sobbed.

“I said I’m sorry.”

She hadn’t.

Audra, watching family fracture, said words she regretted for years.

“Let it go.”

Grant turned.

“No.”

“Grant.”

“It’s Christmas.”

“Please.”

He looked at her.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He let it go.

Camille learned tears worked.

Beatrice learned Audra would choose peace over accountability.

Grant learned nothing because wife asked him not to.

That was tragedy.
