Chapter 1 — The Slap That Changed Everything

# The Stepmother's Lie

## Chapter 1 — The Slap That Changed Everything

The Carter mansion stood proudly atop one of Beverly Hills' quietest hills, surrounded by towering palm trees and perfectly manicured gardens. Behind its elegant stone walls, every room reflected wealth, prestige, and success. To outsiders, the Carter family seemed to have everything anyone could ever dream of.

Only ten-year-old Lily Carter knew how lonely that mansion truly was.

Every afternoon after school, Lily walked past dozens of family photographs lining the grand hallway. In almost every picture, her late mother, Sarah Carter, smiled warmly beside Daniel, while little Lily laughed between them.

Those photographs had become Lily's favorite place in the house.

They reminded her that once...

She had a real family.

Eight years had passed since Sarah lost her battle with cancer.

Daniel had tried to move on.

A year earlier, he married Victoria Carter, a glamorous woman nearly eight years younger than him. To everyone outside the family, Victoria appeared graceful, elegant, and caring.

She smiled beautifully at charity events.

She praised Lily in front of guests.

She called Daniel "the love of her life."

Behind closed doors...

Everything changed.

Whenever Daniel traveled for business, Victoria became someone Lily barely recognized.

Cold.

Controlling.

Cruel.

That afternoon, Lily quietly climbed the marble staircase carrying a small bouquet of white lilies she had picked from the garden.

Today was her mother's birthday.

Every year, she placed fresh flowers inside her mother's old bedroom.

It was the one tradition she refused to abandon.

The hallway was silent.

Daniel had left for an investor meeting that morning.

Victoria believed Lily was downstairs doing homework.

Slowly, Lily reached for the polished brass doorknob.

She gently pushed open the bedroom door.

The familiar scent of lavender still lingered inside.

Nothing had changed.

The elegant white curtains.

The king-size bed.

The framed wedding photograph above the fireplace.

It felt as though Sarah had simply stepped outside for a moment.

Lily smiled softly.

"Happy birthday, Mom."

She walked toward the bedside table where an old crystal vase still waited for fresh flowers.

Before she could place the bouquet inside...

A furious voice exploded behind her.

"What do you think you're doing?"

Lily turned.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

Her eyes burned with rage.

Without warning...

She stormed across the room.

CRACK!

The slap echoed violently through the bedroom.

Lily staggered sideways.

The bouquet fell onto the marble floor.

Five bright red fingerprints immediately appeared across her small cheek.

Victoria glared down at her.

"Who said you could come in here?"

Tears instantly filled Lily's blue eyes.

But they never fell.

Instead...

She slowly raised her head.

"This is my home..."

"And my dad's."

She looked directly into Victoria's eyes.

"This is my mom's bedroom."

"Why can't I come in?"
