# The Stepmother's Lie

## Chapter 17 — The Portrait Returns to Its Place

A charity gala invited many of Beverly Hills' most influential families to the Carter mansion.

Guests admired the restored house.

Many noticed the large family portrait displayed proudly above the fireplace.

One woman quietly asked Daniel,

"I thought this portrait disappeared."

Daniel smiled.

"It never disappeared."

"We simply forgot where it belonged."

Lily overheard the conversation.

She walked toward the painting and gently straightened its frame.

Mrs. Brooks smiled from across the room.

Sarah's portrait no longer represented loss.

It represented strength.

Late that night, after the guests had gone home, Lily stood alone before the portrait.

"I think you'd be proud of Dad."

She smiled softly.

"He kept his promise."

Daniel quietly listened from the hallway.

He didn't interrupt.

He simply smiled.

Because for the first time since Sarah's death...

He believed those words were finally true.
