That evening, Daniel couldn't stop thinking about Lily's face.
Long after everyone had gone to bed, he stood alone in his study staring at an old photograph of Sarah.
His late wife had made him promise something shortly before she died.
"No matter what happens..."
"Protect Lily."
He remembered holding Sarah's hand inside the hospital room.
He remembered promising through tears.
"I will."
Eight years later...
That promise suddenly felt empty.
Daniel replayed the afternoon in his mind.
The frightened look in Lily's eyes.
Victoria answering every question.
The perfectly shaped handprint.
Nothing made sense.
He quietly walked upstairs.
Passing Lily's bedroom, he noticed a faint light beneath the door.
He knocked softly.
"Lily?"
"Can I come in?"
She nodded.
Daniel sat beside her bed.
"I need you to tell me something."
She looked nervous.
"If Victoria hurt you..."
"You don't have to protect her."
Lily remained silent.
Daniel sighed.
"I promised your mom I'd always keep you safe."
Tears finally filled Lily's eyes.
