Chapter 6 — Lily Finds Her Mother's Hidden Journal

# The Stepmother's Lie
## Chapter 6 — Lily Finds Her Mother's Hidden Journal
Daniel spent the entire morning pretending nothing had changed.
He answered emails.
Took business calls.
Read financial reports.
But his attention never left his family.
Every time Victoria entered a room, Lily became noticeably quieter.
Every time Daniel looked away, Victoria's smile disappeared.
It was subtle.
Almost impossible to notice.
Unless someone was finally paying attention.
That afternoon, Victoria left the mansion for a charity luncheon.
Daniel also drove away, telling everyone he had an investor meeting.
Neither Lily nor Victoria knew he had canceled it.
The moment the driveway became quiet, Lily quietly walked upstairs.
She unlocked the master bedroom with the spare key she had secretly kept since her mother's death.
Everything inside remained exactly as she remembered.
She walked toward her mother's old dressing table.
Years ago, Sarah had once smiled and whispered,
"If you ever miss me..."
"...look where I keep my favorite necklace."
At ten years old, Lily hadn't understood.
Now she did.
She carefully opened the bottom drawer.
Nothing.
She removed the velvet jewelry box.
Still nothing.
Then she noticed the drawer wasn't as deep as it appeared.
Her fingers pressed gently against the wooden base.
Click.
A hidden compartment slowly opened.
Inside rested a small leather journal tied with a faded blue ribbon.
Her mother's handwriting covered the first page.
**For Lily.**
Tears filled her eyes.
She slowly opened it.
The first several pages contained birthday memories, bedtime stories, and little notes Sarah had written over the years.
Then the writing suddenly changed.
"If you're reading this..."
"...I'm probably no longer with you."
Lily covered her mouth.
"I've asked our family lawyer to protect everything I've left behind."
"But I'm afraid someone may someday try to erase me from this house."
"If that ever happens..."
"Find Mr. Benjamin Lawson."
"He knows the truth."
Lily stared at the name.
She had never heard it before.
Before she could continue reading...
She heard a car pulling into the driveway.
Victoria had returned much earlier than expected.
