What the Dogs Had Been Protecting

One year later, the military cemetery was quiet again.

A new memorial had been built.

Seven names were carved into black granite.

Six soldiers who had disappeared.

And one survivor.

Michael Reed.

The Dawson family gathered beneath the American flag.

Samuel stood beside Henry.

Rachel stood beside Michael.

Atlas and Titan rested near William's grave.

They were older now.

Slower.

But still powerful.

Henry knelt beside Atlas.

"You knew, didn't you?"

Atlas looked at him.

Henry smiled.

"You knew Grandpa had one last mission."

Atlas gently rested his head against Henry's hand.

Titan sat beside them.

The ceremony began.

A military band played.

The flag was raised.

The family watched silently.

When the final salute ended, Henry looked toward the grave.

For years, he had thought his grandfather had left them with grief.

Now he understood.

William had left them the truth.

He had trusted two enormous dogs to protect that truth.

And they had done exactly that.

Samuel approached Henry.

"Your grandfather would be proud."

Henry looked at Atlas.

"I think he already was."

A gentle wind moved through the cemetery.

Atlas suddenly lifted his head.

Everyone turned.

The dog stared toward the distant tree line.

For a moment, Henry wondered if something was wrong.

Then Atlas relaxed.

He lowered his head.

The danger was gone.

The mission was complete.

For the first time in decades...

There was nothing left to protect.
