## Chapter 1 — A Peaceful Afternoon at the Mall
Saturday afternoons at Beverly Hills Galleria were always lively. Luxury boutiques displayed their newest collections behind spotless glass windows, the scent of freshly brewed coffee drifted through the wide marble corridors, and elegant shoppers wandered from store to store beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Emily Carter walked slowly through the mall, one hand gently supporting her eight-month pregnant belly while the other carried a small shopping bag filled with baby clothes. Every few steps she instinctively paused, smiling whenever she felt her unborn son kick.
"Easy there," she whispered with a laugh. "We'll be home soon."
The baby seemed to respond with another gentle movement.
Emily had spent the morning choosing the final decorations for the nursery. Her husband, David, had insisted she wait until he returned from work, but Emily wanted to surprise him. The tiny blue blanket folded neatly inside her bag was the last piece missing from the room they had spent months preparing together.
Several shoppers smiled warmly as they passed.
"You look beautiful," an elderly woman said.
Emily thanked her politely.
She had always believed pregnancy made people kinder. Complete strangers often opened doors, offered seats, or simply wished her good luck.
She had no reason to think today would be any different.
Behind her, another woman entered the mall.
Sophia Carter.
Emily's younger sister-in-law.
She wore a flawless white designer dress, sparkling diamond earrings, and expensive high heels that clicked softly against the polished marble floor. From a distance she appeared calm and elegant, but her smile disappeared the moment she spotted Emily.
For months Sophia had watched the Carter family shower Emily with love and attention.
Every family dinner became a celebration of the coming baby.
Every conversation eventually turned toward the nursery, baby names, or future plans.
Sophia smiled whenever people were watching.
But inside...
Jealousy had slowly become resentment.
Today she had not come to shop.
She had come looking for Emily.
Watching carefully from several yards away, Sophia quietly followed her through the crowded shopping mall.
Emily never looked back.
She never imagined that someone she considered family was only a few steps behind her.
By the time she reached the center atrium, surrounded by luxury fashion stores and dozens of shoppers...
Sophia had already made her decision.
