## Chapter 18 — A Family Learns the Price of Jealousy
Sophia's trial ended only a few weeks later.
The surveillance footage.
Lily's testimony.
Emily's statement.
And Sophia's own confession left little room for doubt.
The jury returned a guilty verdict.
The judge sentenced Sophia to several years in state prison for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a pregnant woman.
Her parents sat quietly in the courtroom.
Neither celebrated.
Neither cried.
Her father spoke only once.
"We lost two daughters."
"One to jealousy..."
"And one to betrayal."
Emily heard those words but said nothing.
She no longer felt anger.
Only sadness for the family they once had.
As Sophia was escorted from the courtroom in handcuffs, she turned once toward Emily.
Emily simply held her son a little closer.
Some relationships cannot survive the choices people make.
